CHRISTMAS LIGHTS INFORMATION PAGE

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS in Town/City Centres --Normally put up in NOVEMBER/DECEMBER and taken down in JANUARY in the next year.

OUTDOOR TYPE

You can get these in Mains versions or low voltage types with colour and clear bulbs types . These lights sets last for some years ,then the Town/City buy some more new sets of Christmas Lights to replace the old ones.

Years ago some towns supplied their  Christmas Lights electricity from different shops, etc in the town . Nowdays they supply them from the mains ( from Streetlights ,etc.). The towns put in timeswitches in control boxes which feeds the Christmas Lights .

Years ago some other towns supplied their  Christmas Lights direct from the streetlights circuits.  When the streetlights switch on when its gets dark and off when its gets light the Christmas Lights do the same . Sometimes when one of the Christmas Lights bulb fails ,its takes out the main fuse for the streetlight and the streetlight and the Christmas Lights will don't work . Sometimes you see allot of lights not working along the roads .

These towns now have put in control boxes next to the streetlights posts and on walls and the Christmas Lights are now on separate circuits from the streetlights .  In these control boxes are fuses ,MCB ,RCD and timeswitches .They also installed outdoor sockets on to the walls of buildings and the top of streetlights posts . Every year they just connect the Christmas Lights to these sockets . With these Christmas Lights if 1 bulb fails now and take out the fuse , it does not effect the streetlights and switch them off as well. Nowdays the Christmas Lights switch off at night at a set time . Years ago some towns they switch the lights on at 11AM in the morning and switch them of at 11PM at night and they don't do this anymore . Nowdays they turn the Christmas Lights on at 3-4PM and turn off at 11PM . They do this because they save on Electric and at night not many people will be around to see them and they last longer.

Nowdays when the Councils redo the town /city centres they put in circuits for Christmas Lights as well . With modern streetlights posts with integral gear lanterns there is some space for the Christmas Lights control gear (fuse ,MCB ,RCD and timeswitch) and they don't need control boxes next to the streetlights posts .

Early 90s ,the modern trend for Christmas Lights is to use clear bulbs and clear bulbs are cheaper than coloured bulbs. They have started to use rope lights now .

Middle 90s ,alot of the new Christmas Lights are now made of Aluminum Frames with different shape rope lights on them and some of them ,they flash on and off.

Early 2000s , they have started to use white and blue LED bulbs . LED bulbs use less power then normal bulbs .

Middle 2000s , they have started to use rope lights with LED bulbs in them .

With the clear bulbs it reminds me of building site lights and I prefer COLOURED BULBS.
